Otra novedad muy importante para Volkswagen es la llegada del nuevo Tiguan GTE Active Concept, que integra el sistema híbrido enchufable con la tracción total, pudiendo funcionar por separado, circulando con propulsión a las ruedas traseras, con tracción delantera, o con los dos ejes a la vez, gracias a que monta un motor eléctrico sobre el eje trasero, de 85 kW (116 CV) y que no tiene conexión mecánica con el sistema 4Motion.
Sobre la transmisión DSG de seis velocidades del tren delantero actúa otro motor eléctrico de 40 kW (54 CV) que se suma al motor de gasolina 1.4 TSi de 150 CV.
